Specifying the thumbnail for social media?

How can I ensure that the first image in my post is displayed as the default image when sharing the link on social media?

You can set the thumbnail metadata, e.g. 

Thumbnail: /path/To/Image.jpg

The thumbnail is used as the image when the link to your post is shared on social media

I tried using the thumbnail data, and it didn't work.
